ONE STEP CLOSER TO GREEN ENERGY AT GEDNEY MARSH
5 February 2003
South Holland District has an opportunity to move towards
a more sustainable future, as plans have been submitted by
Wind Prospect for a windcluster at Gedney Marsh, near Gedney
Dyke. The proposed development consists of six wind turbines
that could supply clean green electricity to approximately
6,300 homes.
Benefits for the local community include the unique opportunity
for people to invest in green energy, and as part of the project
Wind Prospect pledge to help fund local community projects.
Local businesses could also benefit from more than £1.2 million
worth of contracts that will be placed during the construction
phase.
The planning application was submitted for the windcluster
after independent studies found that the area was suitable
for a wind energy development. These studies, ongoing over
the past two years, included an extensive wintering bird survey
commissioned in response to a request from RSPB.
Local residents have already been able to find out more about
wind energy and the proposed development at Information days
held by Wind Prospect in March 2001 and May 2002. A further
exhibition, to be held in the near future, will allow local
people to see detailed plans for the proposal.
Richard Barker, Development Manager with Wind Prospect said:
'We are very excited about the proposed Gedney Marsh Windcluster.
It meets all of our environmental requirements and is in an
excellent location. There is a recognised need for renewable
energy, and wind energy is the technology that can deliver
today.
Wind energy plays an important part in the UK's future energy
mix, supplying electricity whilst ensuring a cleaner environment
for the future. '
