First Project for Wind Direct

Wind Direct, the renewable energy company specialising in supplying direct to major energy users, today formally commissioned its first project, a 2 MW turbine in March in Cambridgeshire.

The turbine was energised by Dr Mary Archer, a leading researcher in solar energy and long time supporter of renewable energy. Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Archer said:

“Britain needs sustainable sources of energy. British industry needs reliable, long-term supplies of electricity at competitive prices. The Wind Direct concept brings these together for the first time, with wind turbines located on industrial sites supplying energy directly to industrial users.

I believe this integration of renewable resources and energy intensive processes represents a major step forward in our search for a sustainable future.”

The 120m REpower turbine is predicted to generate about 5000 MWhr per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 1000 average homes. It stands next to the new Long Hill Road industrial estate and will be able to supply the units as they come into use, exporting any spare electricity to the grid.

Notes For Editors

Dr. Mary Archer is a scientist specialising in the direct conversion of solar energy to chemical fuels or electric power. She lectured in chemistry in the University of Cambridge from 1976 to 1986. She is Visitor to the University of Hertfordshire, a Trustee of the Cambridge Foundation, and a member of the Board of the Britten Sinfonia. She is also President of The National Energy Foundation, The UK Solar Energy Society, The Guild of Church Musicians and The Cam Valley Forum.

Wind Direct is a partnership of leading independent renewables company, Wind Prospect, renewables grid connection specialists Econnect and renewables trading specialists Optimum Energy.

The Long Hill turbine is a joint venture between local developer Snowmountain Enterprises and Wind Direct. The turbine was supplied by German manufacturer REpower, who has established a joint venture with the Peterborough engineering group, Peter Brotherhood. The project was managed by Wind Prospect, with Econnect supplying and installing the electrical infrastructure and the foundations constructed by local contractor T & J M Hussey.

The next Wind Direct project will be two similar turbines at the Voridian polymer plant near Workington in West Cumbria. Commissioning is planned for the coming winter.
