One Step Closer to Green Energy in Selby District

Selby District could be set to continue its history of power generation as plans have been submitted by Wind Prospect for a wind farm at Rusholme, near Drax. The proposed development consists of twelve wind turbines that would supply enough clean renewable electricity to meet the needs of approximately 14,500 homes.

Benefits for the local community include a unique opportunity for people to invest in 'green' energy and, as part of the project a pledge to help fund local community projects to the tune of £25,000 per year as revenue is generated by the development. Local businesses could also benefit from more than £3.5 million worth of contracts that will be placed during the construction phase.

The planning application was submitted for the wind farm after independent studies found that the area was suitable for a wind energy development. Local residents have already been able to find out more about the proposal at exhibitions held by Wind Prospect. Feedback from these exhibitions helped to finalise the plans for the project.

Helen Plowman, Development Manager of Wind Prospect said:

'Wind energy plays a vital part in the UK's future energy mix, as concerns about the effects of global warming and security of supply are growing. Selby District has a long history of producing electricity for the country and I hope this opportunity will be taken to continue the region's tradition in the renewable age.'

Notes For Editors

Renewable Energy
Wind energy is one of the many technologies to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is the cleanest and lowest cost form of renewable energy available. There are currently more than 65,000 wind turbines operating throughout the world supplying electricity to over 35 million people. The UK is the windiest country in Europe and at present less than 1% of our electricity is supplied by wind energy compared to as much as 25% of electricity supplied by the wind in parts of Germany.

Government and Regional Targets for Renewable Energy
To reflect these needs legislation aims to have 15% of the UK's electricity to be delivered from renewable energy sources by 2015. As part of this commitment each region has carried out a study to assess what their potential is for generating renewable energy. The Yorkshire and Humber study has recommended 7 new wind farms with a combined rated capacity of 200MW with 4 of these being in North Yorkshire.

Wind Prospect
Wind Prospect is a leading independent renewable energy developer, working in UK, Ireland and Australia, both onshore and offshore. When developing this clean, sustainable, everlasting energy supply we encourage local ownership and investment and contract with local companies wherever possible.

The team's success in development, construction and operations has been based on a decade of experience, flexibility and a pioneering spirit.

In 2002 Wind Prospect Ltd project managed the construction of 60% of the wind farms commissioned in the UK and in 2003 were awarded the BWEA Developer's Developer Award following the planning success for over 150MW, both onshore and offshore in the UK.

At present Wind Prospect Ltd operate nearly 50 turbines. With involvement in over 850MW of approved projects, they are now also looking to expand into wave energy development in the UK.
