WHARRELS HILL WIND FARM COMMENCES CONSTRUCTION

Construction of the wind farm Wharrels Hill, Bothel, Cumbria will start during August 2006. The wind farm comprises 8 no. 1.3 MW N60 turbines manufactured and erected by Nordex UK Ltd.

Each turbine is 76 metres high to blade tip, and together they can provide electricity to meet the needs of 5,815 homes. This in turn enables the reduction of some 23,860 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year.

The construction work under contracts awarded by Nordex UK, will comprises of reinforced concrete turbine foundations, access tracks, hard standings used for turbine assembly, cable installation and the construction of a control building. Work will be carried out by Story Construction Ltd of Carlisle and electrical work on site will be completed by Econnect Construction of Hexham.

The grid connection to the local 33kV grid has already been installed in part along the A595 during the winter of 2005/ 2006 by United Utilities who will also supply and commission the high voltage switchgear for the site.

Wind Prospect Ltd have been engaged to act as owners engineer during the construction and operation of the site. Bruce Allan, Operations Director stated “This is a significant project for Wind Prospect to manage on our doorstep from our Cockermouth base and the first 10 year operations agreement we have signed across the world. It continues our success in Cumbria since establishing here in 1995.”

Construction will take approximately 11 months. The installation of the turbines is expected to take place in two phases, the first during March 2007 and the second phase during May 2007. Handover of the project will be conducted in July 2007 from Nordex UK.

The site is under a lease from a number of local landowners and the wind farm will establish links with the local community as previously arranged by the project developer npower renewables, from whom the site was purchased.
