Following detailed assessments of a potential wind farm at
Longpark, near Stow, Galashiels, Wind Prospect submitted a
planning application to Scottish Borders Council in February
2004. This followed extensive consultations with the Council
and Scottish Natural Heritage.
The application for planning permission was initially refused
by Scottish Borders Council in August 2005. However, Wind Prospect
appealed to the Scottish Executive which resulted in the holding
of a public local inquiry in March 2006. Wind Prospect was
successful in this appeal with the Scottish Executive granting
planning permission in July 2006.
The development will consist of 19 wind turbines, each rated
at 2.5 MW, giving a total of 47.5 MW. This will provide clean,
green electricity to meet the equivalent needs of over 26,500
homes. The wind farm will also prevent approximately 64,900
tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide being discharged into the
atmosphere every year, helping in the fight against global
warming.
During a public exhibition of our proposals at Stow Town Hall,
of those members of the local community who completed questionnaires,
84% thought that wind energy had an important role to play in Scotland
and 73% thought that Longpark Wind Farm proposal was a positive development.
